This is a reproduction of an original vintage Gulf Coast railway travel poster produced by the Illinois Central Railroad. The poster features great artwork by the American architect and illustrator Paul Proehl in the early 1930s. The poster was part of a series of posters created by Paul Proehl to advertise various activities and destinations on the luxurious Illinois Central railroad system. This one features a stylishly dressed young golfer on a golf course next to the Gulf Coast, which can be seen in the background. The poster reads – The Beautiful Mississippi Gulf Coast – All Sports – All Year.

The poster lists three of the largest cities in the states in Mississippi, Biloxi, Gulfport and Pass Christian and goes on to suggest that the journey time is 21 hours from Chicago and 17 hours from St Louis. The poster finishes with the claim that Illinois Central is the road of travel luxury.

Proehl was commissioned regularly by the Illinois Central Railway and he is responsible for several great railroad posters. His posters usually portray beautiful and stylish young women relaxing in a variety of leisure activities. His work reflects the 1930s fashions, vehicles and architecture of the late art deco period. His posters for Illinois Central include several promoting the Gulf Coast. However, it is his Chicago The Vacation City poster that he is probably best known for. An original copy of this Mississippi Gulf Coast golfing poster sold in an online auction in 2018 for $3,250 so we’re not the only ones who love his work.
