Menthe-Pastille poster – Baudrier Foucault – 1925
Giffard is the French company founded in 1885 by Émile Giffard that makes the Menthe-Pastille liqueur. Five generations on the classic Menthe Pastille liqueur continues to be made in the same town by the same family. The Giffard website explains the history further:
“In the 1880s, the French pharmacist Émile Giffard researched the invigorating and digestive effects of mint and decided to use it to make a liqueur. The liqueur offered from 1885 sold so well that Giffard converted his pharmacy into a distillery and sold the liqueur under the name Menthe-Pastille.” The name was given as a reference to the tiny mint sweets that were all the rage in those days.
The importance of advertising was not lost to Emile Gifford and the company has used the talents of many prestigious artists such as Cappiello, Ogé, Baudrier, and Dransy. In 1925 they commissioned Baudrier Foucault Jonas to create this ‘Whale’ poster with the strapline Sauvé, disait Jonas, j’ai de la Menthe-Pastille” which translates in to English as ‘Saved, said Jonas, I have Mint Pastille’.
Our posters are carefully and professionally created from vintage originals. Whilst great care is taken in the production of these posters, we also try to maintain a vintage feel, so there may be small imperfections, fold marks, scuffs, tears, or marks that were part of the original poster master. If these do appear they should be visible on the larger views of the item on this listing. The originals of many of the posters we offer can cost many thousands of pounds, so whilst these posters look great, especially framed and mounted on a wall, they are intended as fun, affordable reproductions and not intended fine art prints.
The 50x70cm version has been specially produced to be used in conjunction with Ikea’s 50x70cm Ribba picture frame which currently retails for around £12. So you can bag a bargain of print and poster for just £22.
