Poster: ‘Magasin de Papiers Peints Charpentier-Deny’ advertisement – Louis Théophile Hingre – c1890
Rather unbelievably, this vintage Charpentier-Deny art nouveau poster is a reproduction of the cover of a catalogue cover for a supplier of Paints and Wallpapers. The named of the retailers was Charpentier-Deny. Considering the standard of the artwork on this incredible poster, it is surprising that there is so little information about the artist that created it.
The original oil on canvas Art Nouveau painting was created by Louis Théophile Hingre around 1890. Louis Théophile Hingre (also known as Théophile Hingre) was a French sculpture who made his reputation sculpting animals. He was also a painter, engraver, illustrator and poster artist. He was born in 1832 in Ecouen, France.
This work is clearly inspired by Alfonse Mucha and has similarities in style to Mucha’s 1896, La Plume Zodiac Poster. Whilst there is a Mucha influence, a look at Hingre’s artwork shows his work was of an equal quality. Other works such as his Chocolat Carpentier Confiserie Universelle advertisement, the Grand Bazar nouvelles Galeries poster and his poster for the Champagne manufacturers Champagne Théophile Roederer & Co. are all testiment to Hingre’s skill as an artist.
The Magasin de Papiers Peints Charpentier-Deny work was later recycled as a calendar for the Paris Voltaire shop in Paris in 1901.
Our posters are carefully and professionally created from vintage originals. Whilst great care is taken in the production of these posters, we also try to maintain a vintage feel, so there may be small imperfections, fold marks, scuffs, tears or marks that were part of the original poster master. If these do appear they should be visible on the larger views of the item on this listing. The originals of many of the posters we offer can cost many thousands of pounds, so whilst these posters look great, especially framed and mounted on a wall, they are intended as a fun, affordable reproductions and not intended fine art prints.
The 50x70cm version has been specially produced to be used in conjunction with Ikea’s 50x70cm Ribba picture frame which currently retails for around £12. So you can bag a bargain of print and poster for just £22.
