This reproduction Mont Saint Michel travel poster was originally created circa 1955 and features a colourful image by the renowned artist Bernard Villemot. It was produced for the The Société Nationale des Chemins de fer Français, the French National Railway company. The vintage railway poster offers a seagull’s eye view of Mont Saint Michel Abbey, topped with a statue of the Archangel Michael, and the surrounding commune.
The vintage SNCF railway travel poster encourages the reader to “Visitez Le Mont Saint-Michel avec les trains et les autocars” which translates in to English as Visit Mont Saint Michel by train and coach The Normandy, France
In the mid 1800’s the population on the tidal island was at its highest with around 1100 inhabitants. That number has dropped significantly over the years with a total of 30 inhabitants living on the island in 2017. This monastic island and its bay were listed as an UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1979.
There are at least two original versions of this poster. This one in French and a second was produced for the English market. The poster was also revisited and used again in 1968 with the new logo of the transport company.
