Vintage Travel Poster: Auvergne Poster – E Paul Champseix – 1930

This vintage Auvergne travel poster advertises tours by auto-cars. Rather than a self-drive tour, this would usually be charabancs with groups of tourists ferried around the region. This poster promotes a scenic route that takes in St Flour, Millau and Carcassonne. The tour includes the ruins of Château d’Alleuze, a ruined castle situated in the Cantal department of France.

The castle was built in the 13th century by the constables of Auvergne and belonged to the bishops of Clermont. Characteristic of many 14th century castles, it was built on a square plan, with round towers in each corner. A chapel, Saint-Illide, was added to the castle between the 13th and 15th centuries. The chateau is maintained as a ruin and along with the chapel has been listed as a historic monument by the French Ministry of Culture.

The colourful travel poster was painted by E Paul Champseix for Chemins de Fer du Midi, the French Midlands Railway, in 1930.
