Vintage Travel Poster: La Corse poster – André Strauss – 1927

This vintage La Corse travel poster was realised by the Parisian born artist André Strauss promoting travel to the beautiful island of Corsica. The poster advises on how to get to the island.  The journey will involve travelling by the Departmental Railway, a trip across the sea to Corsica via the Compagnie Marseillaise de Navigation Fraissinet & Cie, the French Fraissinet shipping company. The journey to Évisa being completed by PLM coaches.

Stauss’s wonderful painting features the small and beautiful village of Évisa. The village is located near Porto in western Corsica, sitting between the Tyrrhenian Sea and the mountains of the Corsica Regional Natural Park, surrounded by forests of the Aitone Forest. The view Strauss has selected to present is a view from above the picturesque hill village looking out over the red tiled rooftops of the villages houses. Featuring prominently in the centre of the image is the the Church of Saint Martin with its bell tower. Beyond the commune of Évisa are the red granite mountain peaks and ridges of the Capu d’Orto e Tre Signori

The view is one of the most popular viewpoints on the island and has been photographed thousands of times. The vintage La Corse poster created for the Chemins de fer de PLM was originally printed by Imp de Vaugirard. Original copies of this fantastic poster sell for in excess of €1800.
