It is one of the few Hitchcock films based on a true story and whose plot closely follows the real-life events. An online article on the the hitchcockzone wiki website briefly explains the details of the original story.
In 1951, Christopher Emmanuel “Manny” Balestrero was working as a musician at the Stork Club, a nightclub in New York City, when he was arrested in a case of mistaken identity and charged with the armed robbery of an insurance office. The pressure of the arrest caused Manny’s wife, Rose Balestrero, to have a breakdown and she admitted to a sanatorium. During the court case, the actions of a juror resulted in the judge granting a mistrial. Whilst Manny awaited a re-trail, the real culprit (Charles James Daniell) was caught in the act of robbing a grocery store and Manny was freed.
Despite the claim in the film’s epilogue, Rose always blamed herself for her husband’s arrest and never fully recovered after her nervous breakdown. The family moved to Florida where she passed away in 1982 aged 72. Manny Balestrero survived her by sixteen years dying in North Carolina aged 88.
Our posters are carefully and professionally created from vintage originals. Whilst great care is taken in the production of these posters, we also try to maintain a vintage feel, so there may be small imperfections, fold marks, scuffs, tears or marks that were part of the original poster master. If these do appear they should be visible on the larger views of the item on this listing. The originals of many of the posters we offer can cost many thousands of pounds, so whilst these posters look great, especially framed and mounted on a wall, they are intended as a fun, affordable reproductions and not intended fine art prints.
