Cognac Monnet – Leonetto Cappiello – 1927

Leonetto Cappiello was one of the greatest figures in the history of poster art. As the art nouveau movement, began to fade, Cappiello’s style, an early form of graphic design, became popular. He was the first artist’s to realise that simple caricatures (or what would become logos) used to advertise, made it easy for people to recognise and remember the brands and products.

On this 1927 advertising poster for Cognac Monnet, Cappiello has introduced a wonderful image of a beautiful and elegant female character. The young, spritely woman is skipping around in a 1920’s flapper style, grape coloured dress and scarf. Even the girl’s earrings and made of grapes. Showing she loves the drink she is kissing the huge brandy glass in her hand. The wording on the poster reads: du soeil dans un verre. (The Sun in a glass) and Cappiello has emphasised it in his painting, with rays of sunshine eminating from the glass, which also reflects the warm glow that is given upon drinking the Cognac.

This Leonetto Cappiello Cognac Monnet poster is popular amongst collectors and in 2019 was selling for around $7000-$8000.
