Cleethorpes Poster It’s Quicker By Rail – Greig – 1941
The seaside town of Cleethorpes is situated at the mouth of the Humber Estuary in North East Lincolnshire. Like many of Britain’s seaside town’s Cleethorpes was a small fishing village. In 1863, the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire railway extended the railway line from Grimsby to the town. The opening of the railway station ensured the development of Cleethorpes as a health holiday resort at a time when sea-bathing and ‘the taking of the waters’ was becoming fashionable amongst the country’s elite and well-to-do.
This vintage Cleethorpes poster image is signed by Grieg, an artist that there is very little information about. His painting offers a wonderful scene of the soft, golden sands of Cleethorpe’s popular beach. The beach is full of holidaymakers, tourists, sun and sea-bathers. In the sea, there are people paddling on the water’s edge and swimming in the sea. There is a selection of rowing boats, canoes, yachts and sailboats. In the distance, Cleethorpes Victorian pier can be seen jutting out into the sea estuary. Cleethorpes Pier was opened in 1873. It originally cost £8,000 and was financed by the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway which later became the Great Central Railway. Around the time this poster was produced a section of the pier was cut out to impede its use in any German invasion attempt.
In the foreground, Grieg has featured a group of athletic-looking friends. One couple are sunbathing on a beach towel and a couple of young men are playing leapfrog. The artist has also given the poster a nod to the wartime period by adding an RAF cap on the head of one of the recouping airmen.
Cleethorpes’ picturesque coastline is still a popular destination. In 2021 the Trainline named Cleethorpes beach the second best seaside destination in the UK that is reachable by train, just behind Margate.
section was cut out of the pier during the Second World War to impede its use in any German invasion attempt.
This wonderfully evocative poster was issued in 1941 during World War 2
and one of the two athletic men is sporting an RAF hat .
Very little is known about the artist and only one of his works is in the National Collection. This is a great shame as the composition , colours and impressions makes this one of the great seaside railway posters
.
Our posters are carefully and professionally created from vintage originals. Whilst great care is taken in the production of these posters, we also try to maintain a vintage feel, so there may be small imperfections, fold marks, scuffs, tears or marks that were part of the original poster master. If these do appear they should be visible on the larger views of the item on this listing. The originals of many of the posters we offer can cost many thousands of pounds, so whilst these posters look great, especially framed and mounted on a wall, they are intended as a fun, affordable reproductions and not intended fine art prints.
The 50x70cm version has been specially produced to be used in conjunction with Ikea’s 50x70cm Ribba picture frame which currently retails for around £12. So you can bag a bargain of print and frame for a great price.
