Erasmic Savon De Beauté Vintage Poster – Jean D’Ylen – 1912

This is a vintage advertising poster for the French soap Erasmic., the soap of beauty. The Erasmic poster was created by the artist Jean D’Ylen and was originally produced by the Parisian printers Atlas. In its original form, the large-format poster measured 46 x 62 inches (118x160cm). It was Jean D’Ylen’s first commercially produced poster design. D’Ylen’s image features a clean, naked muse riding in Eramic soap bubble being carried on the air. The poster was a resounding success.

At the end of the first world war, D’Ylen began working at Pierre Vercasson’s printing shop in 1919. It has been claimed that D’Ylen was a pupil of the great Leonetto Cappiello at Vercasson. If not he was certainly heavily influenced by Cappiello’s work. On occasion, without the aid of a signature, it can be very difficult to differentiate between the two artists’ work. When Cappiello left Vercasson to join Devambez in 1922 it was D’Ylen that replaced Cappiello as the favored house artist at Vercasson. He continued to work at Vercasson until 1934 where he produced over 200 posters.

In 2018 an original copy of this superb poster sold for $4,200.
