The L’Aiguille du Midi is a mountain in the Mont Blanc massif in the French Alps that looms over the town of Chamonix. It’s one of the most popular tourist attractions in the region, and for good reason. The views from the top are breathtaking, and the cable car ride is an experience in itself. In 1930, the Chemins de Fer de Montagne Chamonix, or Chamonix Mountain Railway, produced this poster to promote the cable car service to skiers and tourists as potential customers.

Téléphérique de L’ Aiguille du Midi

L’ Aiguille du Midi is an immensely popular tourist destination with nearly half a million visitors per year. It can be directly accessed by the Téléphérique de l’Aiguille du Midi, a cable car that runs from Chamonix. It takes visitors as close to the summit of Mont Blanc as is possible without hiking. Although proposed in 1909, the  Téléphérique wasn’t completed until 1927, when it became the highest cable car in the world. A record held for 33 years until the Merida Cable Car in Venezuela surpassed it in 1960. Not to be completely outdone L’ Aiguille cable car still holds the record as the highest vertical ascent cable car in the world, from 1,035 to 3,842 m.

For today’s the Aiguille summit contains a panoramic viewing platform, a café and a gift shop. A glass skywalk called “Step into the Void” offering a view of over 1000m straight down, is a popular feature at the peak and an attraction called “Le Tube” consists of an enclosed tubular walkway that completely circles the summit.

It was originally produced by the Chemins de Fer de Montagne, aka the French Mountain Railways, to promote the cable car service to skiers and tourists as potential customers.
