Another iconic film and another iconic movie poster! Breakfast at Tiffany’s is a 1961 American romantic comedy film loosely based on a 1958 book of the same name by Truman CapoteThe film was directed by Blake Edwards and stars Audrey Hepburn and George Peppard with Patricia Neal, Buddy Ebsen, Martin Balsam, and Mickey Rooney as supporting cast.
Holly Golightly is without doubt, Hepburn’s most memorable and iconic role, portraying a young, naïve, kooky and troubled socialite come call-girl who falls in love with a struggling writer. A role she regarded as one of her most challenging roles, since she was an introvert playing the part of an extrovert. The film made her and ‘the little black dress’ cultural icons.
The film poster itself was illustrated by the book cover artist Robert McGinnis. In the book Fifth Avenue, 5AM, McGinnis describes a little about its creation;- “The stills weren’t really any good, so I sort of had to take a few leaps on my own. I was shooting pictures of a model for a book cover I was doing, and had her pose with the little orange cat I had in those days. I put the cat on her shoulder, but the cat wouldn’t stay, so she had to put her right arm up to hold it there. It was an accident… …I did give the figure a little more through the hips and bust, to idealize her just a little more. But the art director wanted more leg showing. In the photographs I got, Audrey’s dress was long, all the way to the floor. But I was told to make her sexier, so I exposed that leg. That came from the art director, but I’m sure he got it from the studio.”
The poster, featuring the classic image of Holly Golightly with a cigarette holder in her mouth, has become on of the most sought after film posters of the 1960’s and original copies of this landscape format poster in good condition, will easily fetch £2500-£3000.
The film is considered “culturally, historically or aesthetically” significant by the U.S. Library of Congress and was selected to be preserved in the National Film Registry in 2012.
Our posters are carefully and professionally created from vintage originals. Whilst great care is taken in the production of these posters, we also try to maintain a vintage feel, so there may be small imperfections, fold marks, scuffs, tears or marks that were part of the original poster master. If these do appear they should be visible on the larger views of the item on this listing. The originals of many of the posters we offer can cost many thousands of pounds, so whilst these posters look great, especially framed and mounted on a wall, they are intended as a fun, affordable reproductions and not intended fine art prints.
The 50x70cm version has been specially produced to be used in conjunction with Ikea’s 50x70cm Ribba picture frame which currently retails for around £12. So you can bag a print and frame for a great price.
