Vintage Railway Poster – The Beautiful Mississippi Gulf Coast golf poster – Paul Proehl – 1929
This is the second reproduction Paul Proehl Gulf Coast railway travel poster we are lucky enough to be able to offer. Once again it was produced by the Illinois Central Railroad as part of a series of posters created by Proehl to advertise a variety of activities and destinations on the luxurious Illinois Central railroad system. This one portrays another beautifully dressed young golfer teeing off. This poster has a much larger, green border which whilst doesn’t offer the full page pictorial image does help to make the text read more easily.
The poster lists three of the largest cities in the states in Mississippi, Biloxi, Gulfport and Pass Christian and goes on to suggest that the journey time is 23 hours from Chicago and 19 hours from St Louis. The travel times on the two posters go some way to show how quickly the railway services were improving during this period. There is only a few years difference in the production dates of the posters, however, two hours has been knocked off the overall journey time from Chicago and St Louis.
This Illinois Central poster offers a closer view of the activities and a motor car on the beach on the Gulf Coast. It also features a ship, yachts, and an ocean liner crossing the sea. The poster manages to include that the resort offers Golf, Bathing, Boating and Fishing but unusually it also suggests that the region has Home and Investment opportunities to offer.
Proehl was commissioned regularly by the Illinois Central Railway and he is responsible for several great railroad posters. His posters usually portray beautiful and stylish young women relaxing in a variety of leisure activities. His work reflects the 1930s fashions, vehicles and architecture of the late art deco period. His posters for Illinois Central include several promoting the Gulf Coast. However, it is his Chicago The Vacation City poster that he is probably best known for. An original copy of this Mississippi Gulf Coast golfing poster sold in an online auction in 2018 for $3,250 so we’re not the only ones who love his work.
Our posters are carefully and professionally created from vintage originals. Whilst great care is taken in the production of these posters, we also try to maintain a vintage feel, so there may be small imperfections, fold marks, scuffs, tears, or marks that were part of the original poster master. If these do appear they should be visible on the larger views of the item on this listing. The originals of many of the posters we offer can cost many thousands of pounds, so whilst these posters look great, especially framed and mounted on a wall, they are intended as fun, affordable reproductions and not intended fine art prints.
The 50x70cm version has been specially produced to be used in conjunction with Ikea’s 50x70cm Ribba picture frame which currently retails for around £15. So you can bag a bargain of print and frame for a great price.
