Poster: Bal de Moulin Rouge poster – O’Kley – c1958
This vintage Bal Du Moulin Rouge poster was created by the Nantes-born artist Pierre Gilardeau, better known as O’Kley. It was produced to promote the reopening of the Moulin Rouge in 1951, following some major renovations. The poster features a young dancer performing the dance that the Moulin Rouge made famous, the Can-Can. O’Kley’s pin-up style was extremely popular and his posters for the Folies Bergere and the Moulin Rouge are some of the most collectible French posters of the era.
In 1951 the Moulin Rouge was acquired by Georges France who owned Le Balajo, a dance bar in Paris. Upon its purchase, France undertook major modernisation and renovations of the historic building. The cabaret’s new look would include a new and improved cabaret. Indeed, France’s aim was to bring back the Moulin Rouge’s soul. To make it a place where people had a good time and could enjoy amazing shows performed by talented artists.
The cabaret’s new life kicked off with a number that included Charles Trenet, Charles Aznavour, and Bourvil.
Our posters are carefully and professionally created from vintage originals. Whilst great care is taken in the production of these posters, we also try to maintain a vintage feel, so there may be small imperfections, fold marks, scuffs, tears or marks that were part of the original poster master. If these do appear they should be visible on the larger views of the item on this listing. The originals of many of the posters we offer can cost many thousands of pounds, so whilst these posters look great, especially framed and mounted on a wall, they are intended as a fun, affordable reproductions and not intended fine art prints.
The 50x70cm version has been specially produced to be used in conjunction with Ikea’s 50x70cm Ribba picture frame which currently retails for around £12. So you can bag a bargain of print and poster for just £22.
