The 3me Grand Prix d’Endurance de 24 heures (Coupes Rudge-Whitworth) is the third year of what, in its early years, was referred to as the Rudge-Whitworth Cup in honor of the prizes offered by the popular tire manufacturer. It is now know as Le Mans. 24 hours of driving. The gruelling race took place on the Circuit Permanent de la Sarthe, Sarthe, France, on the 21st June 1925. Initially 68 cars entered the race and 49 started but only 16 finished.
This is a superb reproduction of the very rare 1925 Le Mans 24 Hours official event poster from the third ever 24 hour event. Only eight of these posters are known to exist. It features artwork by Ch. Tranchant showing a what looks like the winning Lorraine-Dietrich B3-6 automobile speeding though the night. Searchlights flash across the moonlit sky, headlights cut through the dark of night set against a clock face to symbolically showing the drivers are racing against time. It’s a masterful design that captures all the event’s drama, speed, and intensity. An original of this poster went to auction in 2019 with an estimate of between $17,000 and £20,000.
This event was won by Gerard Des Courcelles and Andre Rossignol in their Lorraine-Dietrich B3-6. They traveled 2,234 kilometers (1,388 miles) in 24 hours for an average of about 93 kilometers (58 miles) per hour.The 3rd Grand Prix of Enduranrace in 1925 was the first time the race commenced with the famed ‘Le Mans start’ where the drivers ran for their cars.
